Step up for School is our school readiness and early development service. It focuses on the building blocks that children and their families need in order for a child to be ready for nursery and school. Child development activities can start from birth, and parents play a vital role as their child’s first educator.

We support parents with a range of information, activities and resources to help them support their child’s development.

Specifically, Step up for School supports around 6 core outcomes:

• Speech, Language and Communication
• Routine/Mealtimes
• Independent Dressing
• Fine and Gross Motor Skills
• Social Skills/Sharing
• Toileting

This support is interwoven through our Home Visiting and Family Group services, as well as delivered directly, through one-to-one sessions with parents over a 6-week period, and through our community engagement events.

Community Engagement Events

Step up for school also uses a community approach to reach new families not already receiving our services. We carry out these events on a regular basis at busy family venues, and where parents have free access.

We set up friendly displays and provide free information and resources to families to help support with their children’s early development. The kinds of resources provided include:

• Books
• Toileting books and fact sheets
• Bedtime factsheets
• Reward Charts
• Activity ideas
• Milestone charts
• Games
• Activities and toys
• Motor skills factsheets, and more!

These events prove very popular as it is a way to engage with parents in an informal setting, sharing ideas, hints, tips and reassurance.
